1. Start Early

The earlier you start, the more manageable your workload will feel. Review your lecture notes, identify key topics, and give yourself time to revisit tricky areas or seek help. Consistent effort over time is far more effective than cramming.

2. Prioritise Tasks

Identify the subjects or topics that need more attention and place them at the top of your study schedule. Focus on core concepts first, then move on to the details. Prioritising helps you use your time and energy more efficiently.

3. Create a Study Plan

A study plan keeps you organised and ensures you cover everything you need. You could break revision into subjects, then smaller topics, and leave time for regular review. Use colour coded calendars or apps to track your progress and set realistic goals.

Ulster University's Student Success Centre offers lots of resources to help you on your way to exam success, from their Study Skills Toolkit to free skills workshops.

4. Stay Organised

Keep your notes, materials, and resources in order to avoid unnecessary stress. Use folders, binders, or digital tools to store everything clearly. A tidy, calm workspace makes it easier to stay productive and find what you need.

5. Take Breaks

Regular breaks help you stay focused and prevent burnout. Use short pauses to stretch, hydrate, or do something you enjoy, such as grabbing a coffee, watching something light, going for a walk, or listening to music.

6. Stay Healthy

Good physical and mental health support better performance. Eat well, stay hydrated, and get enough sleep. Try not to rely on excessive caffeine or junk food, as they can affect your energy and concentration.

Check out the video below for quick and easy student meals to keep you nourished and fed through exam time.

7. Seek Support

Reach out if you feel overwhelmed or unsure about the material. Talk to tutors or fellow students, or join a study group to share tips and stay motivated. Student Wellbeing is also available if you want to speak to someone outside your circle.

8. Set Up a Distraction-Free Study Space

Choose a quiet spot as your study space, use noise cancelling headphones if needed, and turn off notifications. Set boundaries with others during study time. If you like background structure, try “study with me” videos for accountability like the one below.

Your campus Library is the ideal study location, offering 24-hour access, quiet study rooms, social learning spaces, and access to computing, printing, scanning and photocopying facilities. They also have extended staffed hours during exam time if you need additional support.

9. Stay Positive

Maintain a positive attitude and believe in your abilities. Replace negative self talk with reminders of past achievements. Picture yourself feeling calm and prepared. A positive mindset reduces anxiety and boosts motivation.
