Purpose of role
To provide one-to-one training to students with support needs in the use of approved assistive technology software and/or hardware, promoting independent use of assistive technology for study.
AT Trainer
Main Duties
Main duties
- To deliver training in assistive technology software and/or hardware appropriate to the student’s approved support needs.
- To support students to use assistive technology to assist with study-related tasks, such as reading, note-taking, planning, organisation, revision and written work
- To tailor training to the student’s needs and pace, promoting confidence and independent use of assistive technology
- To provide practical guidance on the use of relevant assistive technology tools, which may include Read&Write, MindView, Audio Notetaker, Livescribe, digital voice recorders or other approved software/hardware
- To support students with basic problem-solving in the use of assistive technology and signpost technical issues to the appropriate University or supplier support route where required
- To avoid providing subject-specific tuition, academic content, proofreading, editing or completing work on the student’s behalf
- To ensure that electronic timesheets are completed on a regular basis and by key dates as advised by the Register of Support Providers
- To maintain confidential records, including an electronic record of all contact with students, ensuring these are safeguarded in line with Data Protection legislation in Northern Ireland.
- To have regard to the University’s equality, diversity and inclusion expectations when providing support.
- To follow relevant health and safety requirements when providing support on campus
- To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant developments and best practice in assistive technology and disability support in post-16 education.
- To maintain appropriate CPD, professional competence, status and memberships of professional bodies, where applicable.
Education and Experience
Educational and Experience
Essential
- Educated to degree level or equivalent or relevant experience in teaching or training people with a disability or Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) in the use of assistive technology.
Previous Experience/Training
Essential
- Experience teaching or training computer software and/or hardware on a one-to-one basis or to small groups.
- Experience and knowledge of assistive technology used to support students with disabilities or Specific Learning Difficulties.
- Experience training users in assistive software and/or hardware, such as Read&Write, MindView, Audio Notetaker, Livescribe, digital voice recorders or similar.
Desirable
- Experience of supporting students in higher education.
- Experience in technical support, problem solving and finding solutions to technical issues.
Job Related Achievements
Essential
- Ability to tailor assistive technology training to individual student needs.
- Ability to support students to use assistive technology independently for study-related tasks.
- Ability to deliver support remotely if required, including access to appropriate IT equipment and a reliable internet connection.
Desirable
- Experience in the development of learning plans or resources for assistive technology use.
Inter-personal Skills
Essential
- Excellent written communication skills and ability to communicate with students on a one to one basis using exceptional interpersonal skills.
- Understanding of confidentiality and data protection responsibilities.
Desirable
- Ability to devise creative problem-solving strategies.

- All successful candidates will be expected to complete an Access NI (Enhanced disclosure) check.
