Mandarin HSK1 ( Chinese Proficiency Test Level 1)
The programme is made up of fifteen lessons, each 2 hours long, that will run between 30 November and 3 May (Christmas and Easter breaks). You will learn the vocabulary and grammatical constructs to communicate basic ideas in Mandarin Chinese and build a solid foundation for future levels. This face-to-face course will:
- Introduce you to Mandarin Chinese, including pinyin phonetics and Chinese character writing
- Help you learn basic vocabulary grammar to help you complete the most essential tasks in Mandarin Chinese
- Get you started with reading and writing text in Chinese characters
After you finish this course, you will be well prepared to take the HSK 1 test
- Who is eligible? First and second year UG students – both full-time and part-time.
- Duration: 15 weeks, with 2-hour classes
- Programme Dates: 30 November 2022 - 3 May 2023, each Wednesday afternoon (except Christmas and Easter holidays)
- Programme Time:
- Belfast campus : 4.15pm to 6.15pm
- Coleraine campus: 2.15pm to 4.15pm
- Exam Date: Wednesday 10 May face to face
- Location: Belfast and Coleraine campuses

Beginner's French
New exciting opportunity to participate in a 6 week taster course coming in the new year!
The programme is made up of six lessons, each 2 hours long, that will run from 31 January until 14 March.
Students taking the course are not expected to have any previous knowledge of the language. The aim is to introduce students to the language, the culture and basic grammatical concepts and to equip them with the skills to communicate at a basic level.
The Beginner’s programme is a great way to get started with a language and make new friends!
- Who is eligible? First and second year UG students – both full-time and part-time.
- Duration: 6 weeks, with 2-hour classes
- Programme Dates: 31 January – 14 March, every Tuesday (no class week commencing 13th February)
- Programme Time: 5-7pm
- Location: Belfast Metropolitan College, Millfield campus, Belfast
- Cost: Free!
- Application deadline: 9th December 2023
