The English for Academic Studies Centre (EASC) is here to support you throughout your time as an international student at Ulster, helping you develop the academic English skills and confidence you need for your studies. By engaging with two scheduled EASC activities alongside your degree programme, you can also meet the requirements for the Ulster Graduate Award.

First Semester of study

English for Academic Purposes: Core Skills for Academic Study

As an international postgraduate student, studying at Ulster offers an opportunity to become familiar with the academic practices, communication skills and expectations of university study.

In Activity 1, you will explore these through English for Academic Purposes (EAP), gaining a practical overview of the academic writing process and developing skills you can apply directly to your degree studies and assignments.

The activity consists of eight core workshops. Alongside these workshops, you will be guided to complete a short reflection on your learning.

Second Semester of study

English for Academic Purposes: Advanced Skills for Academic Study

In your second semester of study your EASC support changes to a more flexible approach. By this stage you will have built a foundation on the core academic skills required at Ulster as well as having submitted several assignments and received extensive feedback from your course lecturers. EASC provision will be delivered in workshops and/ or one-to-one support sessions.

Activity 2 will include one or more elements from the following list of topics:

  • Genres of academic writing
  • Reflective writing
  • Dissertations
  • Group work and collaborative projects
  • Presentation skills
  • Understanding and using feedback from tutors
  • Support for specific upcoming assignments

To complete Activity 2, students are expected to engage appropriately with EASC provision during their second semester of study. The nature and extent of this engagement may vary according to individual academic needs.
