How many credits do I need?

Full-Time Undergraduate Courses

The normal workload for a full-time undergraduate course of study in the standard academic year (comprising semester one and semester two) is 120 credit points.

Part-Time Undergraduate Courses

Some Undergraduate part-time courses allow flexibility in the number of modules which may be studied each year.

The maximum part-time study load is 90 credits in a two semester year (or 135 in a full calendar year) with 45 credits per semester, except in the intensive summer semester where 20 credits may be taken.

Postgraduate Courses

Masters courses usually have a total of 180 credit points.

Full time Masters courses are completed in one calendar year, with 60 credit points being accumulated in each of the three semesters.

Postgraduate Certificate courses represent 60 credit points and Postgraduate Diploma courses represent 120 credit points.

Important: keeping your module record accurate

To ensure your academic record is correct and that you receive credit for the modules you complete, it’s essential to notify the Registry Office of any changes, errors, or omissions in your module enrolment within the deadlines.

Key Deadlines

  • Semester One: You must notify the Registry Office of any changes within the first two weeks.
  • Semester Two: You must notify the Registry Office within the first two weeks of the second semester.

After these deadlines

  • You can still drop modules, but you cannot add new ones.
  • Full-time students who drop modules may be reclassified as part-time, which could affect your financial support.
  • Part-time students will not receive a refund for dropped modules unless the Registry Office is informed within the first two weeks of the semester.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

  • You won’t be able to sit exams or receive credit for any modules not properly registered.
  • You may attend classes, but you’ll need to re-enrol next academic year to gain credit.
  • Part-time students will need to pay again for any modules not refunded in time.

Modules offered in both semesters

If you're enrolled in the wrong semester for a module that runs in both, you may still receive credit, but only if your Course/Subject Director and Module Coordinator agree to make special arrangements for exams and marking.
