The Legal Services Unit sits within the Office of the University Secretary, which also comprises the Governance and Strategic Policy; Council /Committee Services and Data Protection and Information Compliance teams.
The Legal Services Unit provides effective legal advice and support across the University, overseeing the management of the University’s contract with its external legal advisors and regularly liaising with and instructing the University’s external solicitors as required.
The Legal Services Unit also oversees the implementation and operation of the Student Conduct Ordinances and provides support services to the Student Discipline Committee, the Student Discipline Appeal Committee and Student Safeguarding Committee.
When and How to Contact Legal Services
We encourage colleagues to involve Legal Services from an early stage so that timely advice can be provided as appropriate.
Requests for legal advice should be submitted via the Legal Advice Request Form linked below.
If you have any general enquiries, please email these to legalservices@ulster.ac.uk.
If your query relates to one of the following matters, please first seek advice from colleagues in the relevant department, who will contact and involve Legal Services when necessary.
- Data Protection Issues and Freedom of Information - contact the Data Protection and Information Compliance Unit at gdpr@ulster.ac.uk
- Procurement matters including contracts or questions relating to the acquisition of goods, services and/or works across the University - contact the University Procurement team at procurement_enquiries@ulster.ac.uk It is up to colleagues to familiarise themselves with and comply with the University's Procurement Policy. The Legal Services Unit does not provide advices in this regard.

Any University employee can seek advice from the Legal Services Unit on matters relating to the business of the University or its subsidiaries.
Please note: The Legal Services Unit acts for the University and as such are only able to advise on University matters. We are unable to offer legal advice to students or staff on private or personal matters, including claims they may have against the University. Students should contact UUSU and staff should seek independent legal advice.

Electronic Signature Service
Adobe Sign is available for staff to allow you to securely execute contracts and other documents by accepting electronic signatures.
Central Agreement Repository
University staff are required to upload onto the University Central Agreement Repository, a copy of all new signed legal agreements which the University enters into.
Legal Agreement Templates
Development of template legal agreements are encouraged where colleagues are repeatedly entering into the same type of agreement with third parties.
