The Global Excellence in Pharmacy Programme funded by the International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF) and the Department for the Economy Northern Ireland is a flagship initiative of the Centre. This programme has served as a dynamic platform to foster high-impact collaboration between world-leading academics, researchers, clinicians and industry partners.
Through this initiative Ulster University welcomed international pharmacy leaders to Northern Ireland - each with expertise in transformative areas of pharmaceutical education, clinical practice or pharmaceutical innovation. Their visits enabled meaningful engagement with students, staff and local stakeholders and focused on advancing interdisciplinary research, educational enhancement and global partnership-building.
Indonesia
Dr Delly Ramadan Associate Professor at Universitas Indonesia is a leading voice in pharmaceutical education and medicines delivery research in Southeast Asia. Dr Ramadan brought fresh insight into pharmaceutical research within his department.

Malaysia
Professor Mohamad Haniki Bin Nik Mohamed of Kulliyyah of Pharmacy International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Prof Haniki’s visit focused on tobacco cessation interventions, behavioural change and interprofessional education. His collaboration further strengthens Ulster’s outreach into South-East Asian pharmacy networks.

North America
Professor Emeritus Terrence Schwinghammer from West Virginia University United States of America is a globally respected clinical educator and author on topics in health care such as pharmacotherapy in adults, ambulatory care and pharmaceutical care to underserved populations.
Prof Schwinghammer contributed to strategic discussions on experiential learning and curriculum innovation, informed by decades of leadership in U.S. pharmacy education.

Egypt
Dr Islam Khalil joined the School team visiting from Egypt. Dr Khalil represents a bridge between academia and pharmaceutical industry. having worked across both sectors. His expertise in translational research, clinical trials and pharma partnerships helped shape discussions around innovation and commercialisation.

United Kingdom
Dr Penny Lewis Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Manchester is an expert in interprofessional education and pharmacy workforce development.
Dr Lewis shared best practice approaches and co-led seminars exploring educational policy and international workforce readiness with our teams laying foundations for collaborative work nationally within the UK.

The Global Excellence in Pharmacy Programme has gone far beyond a series of individual visits, establishing a strong foundation for lasting relationships and collaborative ventures. It has fostered research partnerships with institutions across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and North America, while also enabling the co-development of educational modules focused on clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical care.
The programme has strengthened academic–industry linkages paving the way for future student exchanges, collaborative research supervision and industrial placements. Serving as a springboard for new ideas, grant proposals and expanded international engagement, this initiative highlights Ulster University’s ongoing commitment to global thought leadership and to embedding meaningful international collaboration at the core of pharmacy education and research.
