Dr John Mallett


Overview

John Mallett is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology at Ulster University. He has been teaching statistics and research methods for over 20 years and has published widely in the areas of psychology, health and social policy. His expertise in advanced statistical analysis is reflected in many of his publications. He has obtained research funding from a wide range of organisations and has presented research findings to both governmental and non-governmental and community agencies.

His current roles within the School include membership of the School of Psychology Staff and Postgraduate Research Ethics Committee. He is also assistant course director for the MSc Health Psychology global online programme responsible mainly for student pastoral care issues.

Previous roles

He was previously academic coordinator  on the Magee campus from 2010-17 and a member of the

Faculty Teaching & Learning committee and the School of Psychology’s Health & Safety Committee during this period.

  • BSc (Psychology) 2-1 (1988) from the  University of Ulster
  • MSc Occupational Psychology (1989) from Queens University, Belfast
  • PhD Psychology in 2000 from Ulster University.

Research focus

Since 2020 John’s research focus has been on the impact of COVID-19 on health and wellbeing of those working in the health and social care sectors in the UK.

Research Interests

John has published widely in the areas of psychology, health and social policy. His expertise in statistical analysis is reflected in the range of his publications. His research interests have spanned specific areas in health psychology such as eating behaviour,  healthy ageing, coping and mental health psychology.

He is currently a reviewer for a range of academic journals including Acta Psychologica, European Journal of Psycho-traumatology, Health & Place, Healthcare, International Journal of Environmental & Public Health Research. John has also acted as a statistical reviewer for the National Institute for Health Research and has provided reviews for the Honest Broker Service in Northern Ireland.

Discipline & Research Leadership Positions

Reviewer for National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and has conducted statistical reviews for the Honest Broker Service in Northern Ireland.

Current Teaching

At undergraduate level, he is currently module coordinator for PSY109 ‘Research Procedures in the Behavioural Sciences’ and contribute to PSY107/112 ‘Psychology Applied to Health’.

Postgraduate

At postgraduate level, He is module tutor for PSY857 ‘Methods & Issues in Research & Practice’ on the global online MSc Health Psychology programme. He is also the pastoral tutor and supervise research dissertation projects on this programme.

He has also been teaching on our annual Research & Statistics Summer School since 2004.

John has taught on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate psychology modules, such as PSY126 ‘Research Design & Analysis’,  PSY556 ‘Health Psychology’ (2005-17) and have taught the quantitative aspects of the masters module PSY822 ‘Advanced Research Methods in Applied Psychology’ from 2010-17.

Research Supervision

John has co-supervised over 20 PhD research students since 2003 on a diverse range of topics.

Ann Doherty

Patterns of healthcare utilisation in older people: secondary data analysis of service evaluation and epidemiological data (2021).

Supervisors: Professor Gary Adamson; Professor Mark Shevlin; Dr John Mallett.

Ann subsequently took up a research post at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin and is now postdoctoral researcher in the Department of General Practice in University College Cork.

Justin MacLochlainn

Justin is employed as a research associate at Ulster University’s School of Applied Social and Policy Sciences.

Administrative Roles and Memberships

John received FHEA status in 2016 via Ulster University Professional Development Scheme and have held. Associate Fellow status BPS May 2016.

He is a chartered psychologist with the British Psychological Society and an associate member of the Division of Health Psychology since 2013. He received fellowship membership of the Higher Education Academy in 2016 via Ulster University’s Professional Development Scheme.

John is an active reviewer for a range of academic journals and has provided statistical reviews for the National Institute for Health Research and the Northern Ireland Honest Broker Service.

Community Impact

His PhD thesis was an examination of the links between poverty and ill-health in Northern Ireland (2000) working with the Child Poverty Action Group (N.I.) and Save the Children.

He has also conducted research on the quality of life benefits of volunteering in Northern among the over 50’s  published by Volunteer Now in 2011.
