Ulster University Leads Pioneering AI Pilot for Mass Case Management
Collaborating with the Labour Relations Agency and TalkTerms to Transform Digital Dispute Resolution
Ulster University’s Centre for Legal Technology (CLT) has launched a groundbreaking pilot partnership with the Labour Relations Agency (LRA) and Northern Ireland-based legal tech startup TalkTerms. This innovative collaboration is set to redefine how large-scale legal disputes are managed, placing Northern Ireland at the forefront of legal technology innovation.
Meeting an Urgent Need with Scalable Innovation
The LRA is currently managing over 250,000 registered cases and expects claims from 30,000 individuals stemming from the Agnew holiday pay underpayment ruling. To address this unprecedented volume, the pilot will explore AI-powered solutions to streamline mass case management and enhance service delivery.
“This partnership highlights how academic expertise, public sector leadership, and entrepreneurial agility can come together to deliver real societal impact.”
— John Keers BL, Director, Centre for Legal Technology, Ulster University
Strengthening Public Sector Resilience
For the LRA, this initiative is a strategic step toward building long-term operational resilience in the face of escalating case volumes.
“The sheer scale of miscalculated holiday pay claims means we must rethink our approach. This collaboration enables us to deliver more sustainable, effective services into the future.”
— Mark McAllister, Chief Executive, Labour Relations Agency
Technology with a Purpose
TalkTerms brings its “Swift Care” platform to the partnership, offering technology designed to support accessible, fair, and efficient dispute resolution.
“We are honoured to join forces with Ulster University and the LRA. This pilot allows us to scale responsibly while driving meaningful societal impact.”
— Gary Lyons, CEO, TalkTerms
