A comprehensive reading symptom questionnaire to aid visual stress diagnosis.
The Ulster Visual Stress Questionnaire (UVSQ) has been developed by researchers at the Centre for Optometry & Vision Science, Ulster University to aid diagnosis of visual stress.
The questionnaire was developed through analysis of reading symptoms of over 1200 undergraduate students. It is comprised of the 10-most pertinent reading symptoms proposed to diagnose visual stress in symptomatic readers.
How to use the Ulster Visual Stress Questionnaire
The UVSQ will help eyecare and educational professionals to assess patients presenting with symptoms/issues with reading suggestive of visual stress.
The Ulster Visual Stress Questionnaire is a straightforward questionnaire comprising 10 items, taking only a few minutes to administer.
Those administering the questionnaire can investigate visual stress in patients by scoring frequency of reading symptoms experienced on a 0-5 scale. A total visual stress score can then be summed to assess overall visual stress severity. Administrators are encouraged to verbally state the questions while the individual is viewing a crowded passage of text or typical reading material and probe how frequently the individual experiences each issue when reading. This approach helps to fully identify any reading-related symptoms or difficulties the individual may experience.
