A major milestone for Northern Ireland’s screen industry has been marked with the launch of Studio Ulster in June 2025.

Studio Ulster is a world-class virtual production campus designed to support everything from blockbuster films and high-end television to game development, world-class animation, and immersive media.

Co-developed by Ulster University with support from NI Screen, the studio the only purpose-built virtual production facility on the island of Ireland. It’s designed to help the UK and Ireland make more high-quality films and TV shows, using advanced technology that creates visual effects during filming. It aims to set a new standard for how studios work around the world.

What is virtual production?

Virtual production lets creators build entire worlds in one place using digital technology. It gives filmmakers more creative freedom, saves time and money, and is better for the environment because it reduces the need to travel or build big sets.

Studio Ulster boasts state-of-the-art virtual production technology like real-time engines, in-camera visual effects, volumetric capture, and motion tracking, all working together to change how stories are made and shared.
