Your safety and wellbeing are crucial, and we want you to feel empowered and prepared as you navigate university life.
Here are some practical tips and resources to help you stay safe, protect your belongings, and support one another.
Stay with your group and look out for each other during social outings. Have a plan made in case you get split up and confirm a designated meeting point for getting home.
Don’t accept drinks from strangers, and never leave your drink unattended. If you can't guarantee something hasn't been placed into your drink, don't drink it.
Alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to stay alert or try and stick to low alcohol or 0% options. Ask the bar staff what's available.
Drinking responsibly helps you stay aware and make smart decisions. Make sure to eat a substantial meal before going out, be mindful of what you are drinking and how quickly you are drinking.
Think ahead about your route home and, if possible, travel with friends. Set a reminder on your phone so you can leave in time to make your bus or train.
Keep a taxi fare in a separate compartment of your wallet or purse for unexpected situations, like missing the last bus or train.
Even if it doubles your journey time, stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night.
Whatever time of day you are out walking alone, stay alert and remember if you have headphones on, you won't hear who is walking behind you.
Steer clear of situations that could escalate into conflicts.
Knowing your surroundings can enhance your safety and sense of comfort.
Locate important spots like the nearest police station and the hospital.
Exchange phone numbers and build a support system.
Store emergency numbers and trusted taxi firms in your phone and make sure you’re phone is fully charged before going out.
