Elsewhere on Ulster
Starting your PhD journey is an exciting milestone, and we’re delighted to welcome you to Ulster University!
At the heart of your experience is the Doctoral College, a central department dedicated to supporting all Postgraduate Researchers through every stage of their doctoral journey.
You will have received an invitation your Welcome Appointment. This usually takes around 20 minutes and is your opportunity to discuss any queries you have with Doctoral College staff.
Please take some time to read through the step-by-step instructions we’ve provided in your welcome information, which includes important guidance on what to do before your appointment.
The instructions provided in your welcome information also include details for your induction:
In addition, your faculty or subject area will organise a local induction, which will give you insight into your department’s research culture, staff, and expectations. Keep an eye out for communication from your school about these sessions.
If you’re a funded PhD researcher, your stipend payments will be made at the end of each month. Payments can only be made into a UK bank account, so if you're new to Northern Ireland and the UK, we recommend arranging an appointment with a bank as soon as possible to get this set up.
For more information on setting up a bank account in Northern Ireland, visit Opening A Bank Account.
As an international PhD student, the International Student Advisory Service (ISAS) is here to support you every step of the way. From pre-arrival and registration, through to graduation, our team is here to ensure your PhD experience at Ulster is unforgettable.

The International Student Guide to Ulster is also an incredibly useful support hub, offering guidance on everything from settling in and accessing key services, to staying informed and making the most of your university experience in Northern Ireland.
