Bursaries

Check to see if you automatically qualify for one of our Bursaries.

There are two bursaries available at Ulster University.  Bursaries do not need to be repaid, and you do not need to apply for these.

Please see below for eligibility criteria and to check if how to automatically qualify.

  • Widening Access Bursary

As part of our commitment to Widening Access, the University offers a Widening Access Bursary of 10% of the total annual tuition fee to eligible students. In order to qualify you must:

    • be ordinarily resident in Northern Ireland or Republic of Ireland.
    • be registered on a full-time undergraduate course leading to a first degree or PGCE (see below for courses not eligible)
    • be from a household with residual income of £19,203 or less
    • hold a UK bank account for the award to be paid into.

The Bursary for the academic year 2020/21 was £439. This is ordinarily paid to students on the last Monday in March.

In addition to the eligibility criteria above, to automatically qualify, when applying to Student Finance, please ensure you and your sponsors (parents/guardians) tick the box to give consent to share the household income details with the University.

    Additional Information:

The following full-time undergraduate students are not eligible to receive this bursary:

    • Nursing Students
    • Social Work Students
    • Allied Health Professional students
    • Students on a Placement year
    • Students repeating the academic year in part (i.e. not the full year)

Students who apply to Student Finance late, or have given consent to share the household income details with the University late,  will receive payment 14 days after the bursary has been approved.

Eligible students must have applied to Student Finance before 30 May of the current academic year in order to receive the bursary. If you have not given consent to share, contact Student Finance on 0300 1000 077 to update your details.

New students must have income details verified by the Education Authority before payment can be made.  Students can contact their local Student Finance office requesting this be done. At this stage, students will be advised if their sponsors have not yet submitted all information required of them.

  • Care Leaver Bursary

The Care Leavers Bursary forms part of a comprehensive suite of financial and non-financial support under the ‘Fostering Aspirations’ banner.

This Bursary is available to full-time undergraduate students leaving care, or who have spent time in care for a period of three months, are eligible.

The Bursary for the academic year 2020/21 was £1,000. This is typically paid to students around Christmas each year.

In addition to the eligibility criteria above, to automatically qualify, on your UCAS form, tick the box that asks if you have been in care.  If you have already applied to Ulster University, but have not ticked this box, please contact our team on 02871 675233 or email: p.cassidy@ulster.ac.uk.
