Jim Maginn


Overview

Jim Maginn has been involved in photography for 50 years. He studied under Victor Sloan at Lurgan Technical College from 1976 to 1979 before attending The Ulster Polytechnic (Now UU) Foundation Art and Design course. He graduated in 1980.

In 1988 he graduated from the Documentary Photography course in Gwent College Newport. Jim has been living in Belfast since 1988.

In 2018 he graduated from Ulster University with a Master of Fine Art (Photography).

1989 - 1994 He was an Artist in the Community (Photography) for the NI Arts Council. During this period, he set up an ad hoc group, Photo Works North. The group started the Photographic review Source.

Jim. Has worked at UU since 1992 teaching on Foundation as well as Vis Com and the BAHons Photography Degree.

Jim started a project documenting Traditional Musicians while a student in Newport. He continues with this archive. In 2012 ‘The Light of Other Days’, a book of the work was published.

His main preoccupation in recent times has been mastering large format fine art, aqueous printing.

‘Having grown up using traditional silver photographic I’ve now fully embraced new digital technologies.
