Overview

Life Before Ulster

Fiona McMahon is a Lecturer in Advertising, Marketing and Digital Marketing Communication and Leadership at Ulster University.

She has ten years’ experience working in advertising and marketing from a client and agency perspective, both at home and abroad, having worked in Athens, Greece for world's largest out-of-home advertising business, Clear Channel Outdoor.

Teaching

Fiona has a PgCert in Higher Education Practice and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

She is passionate about bridging the gap between theory and practice and developed the Postgraduate Programme in Digital Marketing Communication and Leadership alongside colleagues from both the Communication and Computing and Mathematics disciplines, and in collaboration with digital professionals.

Fiona studied Social Media Strategy at Babson College, Boston, has an MSc with distinction in Industrial Practice and holds an NVQ level 5 in Management and Leadership from the Chartered Institute of Management.

Research

Fiona’s research interests include social media marketing, online advertising, e-marketing and e-business adoption, with particular interest in how small firms can optimise their internet use to create competitive advantage.

Civic Roles

Fiona has worked on e-marketing consultancy projects with small firms and was Director of Academic Enterprise for the Faculty of Social Sciences from 2015-2016. Recognising the increasing challenges facing students of all ages, Fiona is also a certified Roots of Empathy Instructor, a programme which raises social/emotional competence and increases empathy in primary school children.
