Our operational activity seeks to reduce waste and incorporate sustainability considerations within procurement activity.

With 10.2million tonnes of food and drink was wasted in the UK in 2019, our research seeks to use predictive tools to reduce waste among grocery retailers.

Reducing Food Waste

Ulster University is playing an important role in reducing food wastage across North West Europe thanks to an innovative €4.8m project ‘REAMIT’ which adapts and applies existing innovative technology to food supply chains.

Removing Siloed Thinking about Food Waste

Dr Aoife Caffrey and her research team from Ulster University’s Nutrition Innovation Centre for Food and Health (NICHE) were awarded the 2021 GFS Policy Lab Award for their work entitled ‘A New Era: Removing Siloed Thinking about Food Waste in Food Environments’.

Water fountains

We have increased the number of water fountains on campus, reducing waste from plastic bottles

Waste has reduced overall by 28.7%

Our total routine commercial and office waste has reduced overall by 28.7% from 2009/10 baseline.

Waste furniture and resource redistribution

We have invested in Warp It, a waste furniture and resource redistribution portal making it easy for employees to transfer surplus work items to other individuals inside the university.

This encourages staff to reduce waste generation.

Live Here Love Here

First year Textile Art, Design and Fashion students put their design skills to the test thanks to the ‘Live Here Love Here’ Fashion Forever competition which focuses on sustainable fashion and repurposing clothes instead of throwing them out and shopping for a new outfit.

Reduce the University’s ‘legacy’ paper

A Digitisation project has helped to reduce the University’s ‘legacy’ paper.

The project revitalised ways of working using digital technologies including moving away from paper-based university forms to an online based solution.
