Responsible Futures Accreditation

Ulster University has been awarded the Responsible Futures accreditation, a national mark of excellence that recognises our commitment to embedding sustainability and social responsibility across teaching, learning, and the student experience. Achieved in partnership with Ulster University Students’ Union, the accreditation highlights how we equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and values to drive positive change for a more sustainable future.

Gold Cycle Friendly Employer

Ulster University is proud to be recognised as a Gold Cycle Friendly Employer, reflecting our commitment to promoting cycling as a sustainable, healthy, and accessible mode of transport for staff and students. This accreditation recognises our investment in secure bike parking, shower and changing facilities, and initiatives such as cycle training and awareness campaigns. By supporting cycling, we encourage greener travel, reduce campus emissions, and contribute to a healthier, more active university community.

Living Wage Employer

Ulster University is an accredited Living Wage Employer by the Living Wage Foundation, demonstrating our commitment to fair and equitable pay for all staff. White Ribbon Accreditation

Ulster University is a White Ribbon accredited organisation, demonstrating our commitment to preventing male violence against women and promoting a culture of respect and equality. Through awareness campaigns, training, and support initiatives, we actively work to create a safer and more inclusive environment for staff and students.

Green Key Certificate: Academy Restaurant

The Academy Restaurant, located on our Belfast campus and part of Ulster University Business School, was awarded the Green Key certification, an international eco-label recognising excellence in environmental and sustainable practices. This achievement reflects the restaurant’s commitment to responsible resource management, waste reduction, and the promotion of local and sustainable food sourcing. As a student-led establishment, it also plays a key role in embedding sustainability within the learning experience for future hospitality professionals.

ISO 14001: Estates Services & Procurement

Ulster University's Estates Services and Procurement departments are certified to ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management. This certification demonstrates our commitment to reducing environmental impact, ensuring compliance, and continually improving our sustainability performance across campus operations.

Awards

BITC NI Environmental Benchmarking Survey - Platinum Award and Top 40 Participant

Ulster University achieved Platinum status in the BITC Northern Ireland Environmental Benchmarking Survey and was recognised as a Top 40 performer. This achievement demonstrates our leadership and continuous improvement in managing environmental impacts, showcasing our commitment to sustainability and best practice.

Athena Swan Silver Award

Ulster University holds a silver Athena SWAN award, recognising our commitment to advancing gender equality in higher education. The award reflects our ongoing work to address barriers, promote inclusive policies, and create a supportive environment for all staff and students. Twenty of our Schools have been actively involved in Athena SWAN initiatives, developing action plans to improve gender balance, career progression, and workplace culture and hold bronze, silver, or gold awards.

Autism Impact Award: Student Wellbeing

Ulster University’s Student Wellbeing team has been recognised with the Autism Impact Award for their commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for autistic students. The award highlights the team’s dedication to raising awareness, improving accessibility, and ensuring that every student can thrive during their time at Ulster.

Belfast Business Promise: Ambassador Status

Ulster University has achieved Belfast Business Promise Ambassador status, recognising our role in supporting inclusive growth, sustainability, and responsible business across the city. This status highlights our commitment to working in partnership for the benefit of our people, community, and economy.

Translink: Better on Board Charter

Ulster University has signed the Translink Better Off Board Charter, demonstrating our commitment to promoting sustainable travel. By pledging to this initiative, we support efforts to reduce carbon emissions, improve accessibility, and encourage staff and students to choose greener ways to travel.

Can't Buy My Silence

Ulster University has signed the Can’t Buy My Silence Universities Pledge, reaffirming our commitment to fostering a safe, transparent, and supportive environment for all students and staff. By endorsing this pledge, we commit to ensuring that survivors of sexual harassment and assault are heard, respected, and supported. This pledge aligns with our broader dedication to equality, safety, and wellbeing across campus.

R&A Women in Golf Charter

Ulster University has pledged to the R&A Women in Golf Charter, strengthening our commitment to gender equality and greater participation in sport. By signing the Charter, we are working to create more inclusive opportunities, support female talent, and inspire the next generation of golfers.

North Western Universities Purchasing Consortium

Ulster University is a member of the North West Universities Purchasing Consortium (NWUPC), which drives responsible and sustainable procurement across the higher education sector. Through NWUPC, we are also affiliated with Electronics Watch, an independent monitoring organisation that works to protect the rights of workers in global electronics supply chains. Our membership ensures that the products and services we buy support ethical, transparent, and sustainable practices.
