Ulster University is now 2nd in the UK for overall postgraduate research satisfaction. This marks a significant leap from 4th place and highlights major strides across multiple categories, including 1st place for research support.

The biennial survey offers PhD researchers the opportunity to share their experiences and shape the university's postgraduate research environment. An 84% response rate, more than double the national average of 33%, ensures the findings are both robust and representative.

Leading in Research Support and Online Learning

Ulster’s standout performance includes 1st place rankings in both Research Support and Online Learning Resources. Postgraduate researchers reported strong satisfaction with academic skills training, access to digital tools, IT support, and comprehensive wellbeing services.

The University also ranked 2nd for Professional Development, driven by enhanced opportunities in communication, project management, and industry collaboration. This success is underpinned by investments in Centres for Doctoral Training and strategic partnerships across the UK and Ireland.

A Strong Sense of Community

The University placed 3rd in the UK for Community, affirming its commitment to a supportive and connected research culture. Initiatives such as the Weekly Research Developer Programme, Doctoral Society events, and dedicated social channels help researchers stay engaged.

Recognised for Inclusive Support and Supervision

A jump from 41st to 15th in the Supervision category signals the success of Ulster’s Supervisor Development Programme and international collaborations. Postgraduate researchers with declared disabilities also reported satisfaction levels 10% above the national average, highlighting the University’s inclusive support structures.

Student Experience Recognised by National Student Survey results

The National Student Survey Results are also in and Ulster University saw a significant increase in overall student satisfaction.

The NSS is one of the biggest surveys of its kind in the UK, giving mainly final year undergraduates the chance to share their views on their university experience. For universities, it's an important way to make sure quality standards are met and to find new ways of improving teaching and support.

This year, 3,294 Ulster University students took part in the survey, a strong 72% response rate. They gave the University a rating of 84.6% for overall satisfaction, a 4% increase from last year.

Rachael Wilson, from the School of Psychology, said:

"The School of Psychology at Ulster University has an incredibly supportive culture... My experience of research at PhD level with Ulster University has been amazing and I am grateful for the opportunities, skills and experience that I am gaining to prepare me for future employment prospects."

Akram Alshirah, from the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, shared:

"My project has flourished here thanks to the exceptional support from my supervisors and the entire university community... Ulster has given me not just a place to study, but a place to belong."
