Colin Smyth, School of the Built Environment, who has been appointed to the UK Quantity Surveying and Construction Professional Group Board

Colin Smyth from Ulster’s School of the Built Environment has been appointed a member of the UK Quantity Surveying and Construction Professional Group Board.

Overseen by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the new Board will fulfil a strategic remit, leading on quantity surveying and construction standards and issues.

It will be responsible for engaging with quantity surveying practices, members and governments in the UK and international markets.

Members of the board are drawn from a variety of roles and practices across the sector to form a strong lead for RICS in the construction field.

Colin Smyth, from Ballynure, is Development Manager for Ulster’s Centre for Constructing Excellence, based in the School of the Built Environment.

He said: “I take up this position at a time when the combination of the current economic climate and demand for carbon and waste reduction programmes place heavy emphasis on standards, best practice and cost/waste efficiency in construction projects.

“I plan to work with the RICS and its members to set standards and help develop and support the professional construction sector during this period of major change and challenge.”
