Ulster University’s fire marshals have a dual role through implementing proactive and reactive measures regarding fire safety. Fire marshals are advocates for fire safety within their designated area by continually monitoring and resolving any unsafe fire hazards to minimise the risk of a fire.
Fire marshals have a reactive role to play if the fire alarm system activates within their area.
The role of a Fire Marshal in the workplace:
- Complete (or assist in) the fire safety checklist for their area.
- Visually monitor fire safety in their work area.
- Undertake spot checks of the fire refuge points to ensure they are fully functional (this will require assistance from campus security).
- Reporting faults and unsafe practices.
- To be familiar with the building, the nearest exits, refuge points and fire assembly points so correct advice can be provided when required.
- Respond to the fire alarm activation in their designated area.
- Identify themselves through wearing the designated UU hi-vis vest.
- Conduct a sweep of their designated areas and direct people out of the building, through their nearest emergency exit and to the fire assembly point.
- Control a safe evacuation of the area.
- Aid any person with a disability as appropriate.
- Report the status of their area of responsibility.
- Do not allow anyone to re-enter the building.
- Provide support during the fire evacuation drills and report feedback to the HSW team.
- Collaborative working with other HSW champions across UU.
- Attend annual HSW champion meetings and relevant training. Ensuring training remains in date and valid.
- Inform HSW team if there are any changes to current records held ensuring the master spreadsheet remains up to date.
