The latest book to be published on nursing education in the UK and Ireland has been written by two University of Ulster academics.

Pat Deeny, Senior Lecturer from the School of Nursing at Magee and Professor Emeritus Jennifer Boore, believe their new text will become essential reading for nurse educators across Europe.

‘Nursing Education; Planning and Delivering the Curriculum’, is a strategic guide with a practical focus on designing and management of nursing education programmes.

“This book explains how to develop tailored education programmes so that nurse educators and clinicians can help students provide up-to-date and appropriate patient care, the goal of all high quality nursing programmes,” saidMr Deeny.

“It integrates theory with practice, providing guidance on how nursing students can achieve the essential skills needed to meet professional practice requirements.

“Issues around student selection and retention, patient and carer involvement, integration of theories of education and nursing alongside management of risk and quality assurance are also explored.”

The launch of the innovative text comes just weeks after theNursing and Midwifery Council monitoring results for 2011-2012 showed that Ulster was one of only two approved education institutions to get an ‘outstanding’ grading for practice learning and one of only five institutions to get ‘outstanding’ in any of the five areas monitored.

This places the School of Nursing as one of the top performers for teaching in the UK, putting it in the top 4 per cent of Schools of Nursing monitored by Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
