About the SPEAR Project
SPEAR represents a major investment of €8.46 million in the North-West region, aiming to position it as a strategic hub for semiconductor and photonics research, innovation, and training.
Funded by the PEACEPLUS Programme, the four-year, cross-border initiative is led by ATU’s WiSAR Lab in partnership with Ulster University, the Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork, and Seagate Technology.
Aligned with the EU Chips Act and Ireland’s Smart Specialisation Strategy, SPEAR will deliver impact through three core pillars:
- A Doctoral College training future PhD researchers in photonics and AI
- An Innovation Fund supporting collaborative R&D with regional SMEs
- A Strategic Engagement Programme fostering industry-academic collaboration, public outreach, and policy development
