INNOVATE+ is a cross-border innovation programme supporting SMEs across Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland to improve productivity, competitiveness and long-term sustainability. The initiative is led by Atlantic Technological University (ATU) in partnership with Ulster University, Queen’s University Belfast and Catalyst.
The project responds to shared regional challenges, including relatively low levels of business innovation activity and limited adoption of digital and advanced technologies among SMEs. Ulster University, through the Intelligent Systems Research Centre (ISRC), plays a central role in delivering applied, technology-focused innovation support, helping SMEs translate ideas into practical business improvements.
INNOVATE+ offers a structured innovation pathway for participating SMEs, beginning with an innovation capability assessment and progressing through targeted training, innovation planning, and implementation support. Ulster University provides specialist expertise in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, data analytics, ethical and responsible AI, and technology-enabled process improvement.
A key focus of INNOVATE+ is supporting commercial innovation in practice. SMEs are supported to develop and implement new or enhanced products, services, and operational processes through incentivised undergraduate and postgraduate student placements, supported by expert technical input from Ulster University researchers. This approach enables businesses to test and implement innovative solutions while simultaneously building innovation capability within the organisation.
INNOVATE+ also promotes cross-border collaboration, knowledge exchange, and regional innovation cluster development. Ulster University’s industry-engaged and applied research approach ensures that innovation support is accessible, relevant, and impactful, contributing to sustainable SME growth and long-term regional economic resilience.
