Museum and heritage studies is an inter-disciplinary field attracting interest from areas such as history, education, sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, cultural policy and both historical and cultural geography. This diverse range adds to the vibrancy of the subject and has enabled us to develop a truly innovative field of analysis. PhD research projects should have the potential to make a focused contribution and deepen our understanding of the role, value and impact of the heritage/museum sectors. Previously research has focussed upon multiculturalism and museums; representation of the Northern Ireland conflict in museums and on the heritage landscape; collection histories and development; learning and the museum; and the evaluation of contemporary cultural policy.

In exceptional circumstances, the University may consider a portfolio of evidence from applicants who have appropriate professional experience which is equivalent to the learning outcomes of an Honours degree in lieu of academic qualifications.
If the University receives a large number of applicants for the project, the following desirable criteria may be applied to shortlist applicants for interview.
