80% of our research environment is recognised as international in terms of originality, significance and rigour (REF, 2014).
Our research falls into the following main themes:
- Early modern Irish and European history, including courts, witchcraft, warfare, slavery, plantation, migration, and diaspora.
- Medical history - The Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland houses expertise in modern medical history, including disease, diet, the body, mental health, hospitals, and sexuality.
- Modern Irish, British, European history, including labour, gender, socialism and communism, decolonisation, and revolution.
Our Impact
Our research was integral to Derry/Londonderry being awarded UK City of Culture 2013.
It continues to underpin cultural and heritage tourism on both sides of the Irish border.
We are based in a state-of-the-art humanities building that opened in 2015.
This includes a purpose-built PhD research area for individual and group work.
Historians are members of national and international associations and networks.
