Accommodation Update November 2022

As the academic year has commenced, we understand that some students have faced challenges securing long-term accommodation particularly in Derry~Londonderry and Belfast.

We appreciate the difficulties and stress this has caused.

We want to reassure you that we are here to support you, and colleagues across Ulster University continue to work together to find solutions to the challenges caused by shortages in accommodation across Northern Ireland.

Our priority is the safety, health, and wellbeing of our student community.

In preparation for 2022/23, we secured over 800 additional beds in student accommodation, and we are continuing to look at ways that we can support you at this time: for example, through securing more accommodation and assisting with the rising cost of living. We have also partnered with NI Studentpad in seeking to identify appropriate family and HMO accommodation within the private sector.

If you are seeking accommodation with the University, please ensure you complete an online application with our team so as rooms become available, we can be in contact with you.

We will continue to work in collaboration with the Global Engagement, Student Wellbeing and Student Union Teams to promote accommodation availability for January and September 2023.

If you need any support, please reach out using the contacts above or we also have a range of support services available.

Accommodation Guarantee

Ulster has guaranteed accommodation for single first year students applying by the 7th July and single international students applying by the 14th August. For semester 2 any single international student applying by the 14th December is guaranteed a room.

Family Accommodation

There is only family accommodation on-campus at the Jordanstown Sports Village which is sold out.

There is strong demand for houses and apartments suitable for families in the private-sector across Northern Ireland.

As such, international students seeking this type of accommodation particularly in Belfast and Derry~Londonderry should check out the NI Studentpad website for accommodation in the first instance.

It is important that you secure accommodation in advance of travelling to Northern Ireland.

Arriving Late to Accommodation

No, you will not lose your place, providing you advise our ResLife accommodation team so that they know when you will arrive.

If you do not keep them up to date on your travel and arrival plans, they may allocate your room to someone else as accommodation is in high demand.

Arriving Without Accommodation

If you are not moving into university accommodation you must book temporary accommodation before you leave home unless you are sure that you can move directly into long term accommodation on the day you arrive in Northern Ireland.

We will of course try to assist you in an emergency however there may not be suitable accommodation available on-campus.

You may need to book accommodation in an AirBnB, Bed & Breakfast, hotel or hostel until you source long-term accommodation. NI Studentpad can help you identify and secure appropriate private accommodation.

If you wish to stay in University accommodation, please complete our online application form.

Guidance & advice on finding long-term accommodation is also available.

Waiting List

There is a waiting list that you will be added to if there isn’t university accommodation currently available in your chosen location.

Student accommodation is transient, and rooms do become available throughout the semester.

Financial Support

Whilst there is not specific financial support available for accommodation, there are various sources of financial aid that can be used to support accommodation costs and cost-of-living.
