Paul Clarke is Professor of Architectural Design at the Belfast School of Architecture and the Built Environment. He is subject, academic and studio lead. He is a member of the Architectural Research Group where he is supervising a number of PhDs and leads the sub cluster Drawing: Methodology, Making and Media. His research explores architecture and film, the relationship between digital and analogue drawing, and hand-drawing and notebooks in contemporary critical practice.
He is a chartered architect and member of the RIBA, MRIAI, RIAS and RSUA. He was born and trained in Glasgow and has collaborated and worked with many architects, artists, composers, designers, and filmmakers on a range of works, exhibitions and events. His work has been published and exhibited Internationally.
He is currently an External Examiner in a number of architecture schools in the UK and Ireland, and is a Lead Examiner for the Architects Registration Board.
For Phaidon he collaborated on a number of publications in their Architecture and Detail series. He was part of an expert advisory panel working within the architect’s design team on the restoration of Mackintosh’s Glasgow School of Art. He has drawings in the collections of The Centre for Scottish Design- The Lighthouse, and the Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow School of Art.
He was the curator of a two year touring exhibition and research project called The Secret Laboratory on Architects’ sketchbooks. He directed and produced the film Drawing on Life which has been shown at a series of International film festivals in America, Canada and Europe.
His recent book Notations edited and produced with Peter Maybury is a folio collection of drawings by such internationally recognized architects and artist as Grafton Architects, O’Donnell + Tuomey, Tom DePaor and Nigel Peake. He runs the WaterLands SuperStudio as part of the innovative vertical teaching structure developed in the school.

Dr Martina Murphy is Senior Lecturer in the Belfast School of Architecture and the Built Environment. She has a PhD and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
Martina has been Course Director for the Construction Business and Leadership MSc; Construction Engineering and Management BSc, and the BA and MArch Architecture courses, during which time she led on revalidations for the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) , Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and prescription for the Architects Registration Board (ARB).
As Associate Head of School she oversaw the implementation of a vertical teaching structure for delivering architectural education akin to professional practice, the SuperStudios, which is the first of its kind to be implemented in a UK School of Architecture.
Prior to her work as an academic, Dr Murphy was a practicing architect and managed the design and construction of commercial, public and private sector projects in the UK, Malta, Hong Kong and Thailand. Her main research interests are in the areas of construction innovation, procurement, architectural design and pedagogical innovation.
She obtained her first degree in 1990 and began her academic career in 2011 following a long period in industry. She was awarded a PhD in 2008 under the supervision of Professor George Heaney and Professor Srinath Perera.
Dr Murphy has been Council Member for the Royal Society of Ulster Architects and co-opted Education Chair for the RIBA and the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI). She is Committee Member of the Association of Professional Studies Advisors (APSA) and member of The Standing Conference of Heads of Schools of Architecture (SCHOSA).
Martina is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
She has examined and chaired validation panels in the UK and Europe and have established international academic partnerships in Croatia, China, Bulgaria, Hong Kong and Australia.
Dr Murphy has supervised PhD’s locally and nationally and has sat on the Editorial Boards of Construction Innovation, Emerald Publishing; Construction, Management and Economics, Taylor & Francis; The International Review Board of Archnet-IJAR- International Journal of Architectural Research (MIT Press); Project Management Journal; Journal of Visualization of Engineering, Springer.
Martina has served as a School Governor for Hunter House College, Belfast, and Management Board Member for the South Ulster Housing Association (SUHA) and appointed Director to the Board of Trustees for HomeStart, UK.
