Demonstrating Research Impact
KTP projects must demonstrate impact and new knowledge. In the last REF almost 190 impact case studies cited KTP projects as their key source for impact. These projects spanned across a wide a range of sectors and disciplines.

KTP is a particularly attractive vehicle to support research and REF impact. KTPs require an initial project strategy with a research and new knowledge focus and clear objectives and targets.
Upon completion, partners in each KTP project must produce a report with quantified results of the research providing evidence of impact from your research. Universities are already seeing the results of how KTP can affect REF impact.
Ulster University KTP Case Study
An excellent example is at recent KTP project with Limavady based company Seating Matters Ltd, who are transforming older people’s lives across the world with their innovative therapeutic seating.
Such was the impact of the new capability embedded through the KTP with Seating Matters Ltd that the company has recently been awarded a new federal government of Washington D.C. contract to be the suppliers of therapeutic seating for US Veterans Association Hospitals across the United States.
KTP is classed as research related income. In Northern Ireland, the majority of partnerships are funded by Innovate UK and Invest N.I. (jointly) with a lesser contribution from the company partner. Researchers at Ulster University have also been successful in gaining funding for KTP from research councils depending on the nature of the knowledge transfer.
