Guidance on Internal Peer Review of Research Outputs

In general, manuscripts that are to be submitted to main stream journals will benefit directly from internal peer review by appropriately experienced academic colleagues.

The University supports and encourages the practice of internal peer review activities and the following guidelines set out the recommended procedures and processes for peer review.

In addition a useful Reviewer’s Checklist has been included in the document, see Appendix 1 - Authors may also find the checklist useful when preparing their scholarly work or research outputs

Guidance on Internal Peer Review of Applications for External Funding

Given the increasingly competitive funding environment nationally and internationally, it is important that Ulster is submitting high quality applications.

Internal peer review is designed to provide a supportive environment for researchers and to ensure that only quality proposals are submitted.

Research grants of £100,000 or greater are recommended to have an internal peer review.

In addition to the internal peer review process, the Research Development Team can provide a support service to access a range of ‘external’ expert reviewers.

This service aims to enhance quality standards for the development of strategic, significant research proposals to ensure they are competitive and tailored to specific calls’ scientific and policy strategic priorities.
