Ulster University’s Derry~Londonderry campus was once again a sea of colour and excitement today (20 July) as thousands of young footballers, coaches and supporters gathered for the annual O’Neills Foyle Cup parade, marking the start of one of the largest youth football tournaments in Europe.
Participants assembled outside the Martha Magee building before setting off through the city centre, with the parade route taking in Northland Road, Great James Street, Strand Road and Waterloo Place before finishing at Guildhall Square.
The O’Neills Foyle Cup tournament runs from 20-25 July and brings together teams from across the island of Ireland and further afield, generating a vibrant atmosphere across the North West and promoting the region on an international stage.
Professor Malachy Ó Néill, Director of Regional Engagement, highlighted the importance of the event for young people and the local community, saying:
“Ulster University is proud to continue its longstanding support for the O’Neills Foyle Cup, an event that showcases the very best of sport, community spirit and international friendship while bringing thousands of visitors to the city each year.
“With more than 1,000 teams competing over the next six days, the city is set for an incredible week of football. We're proud to host matches on our pitches and look forward to seeing the talent, teamwork and community spirit on display.”
The Foyle Cup provides a fantastic opportunity for players to demonstrate their talent, dedication and teamwork while creating memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
