School of Computing Engineering and Intelligent Systems in collaboration with Ulster University’s BAME+ Network hosted a Diwali celebration at the Derry~Londonderry campus on 24 October 2025.
‘Diwali’ is a Hindi language word derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Deepavali’ which means a ‘row of light’. It is celebrated by Hindus worldwide by lighting rows of traditional clay oil lamps outside their homes to symbolise the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
Staff and students along with their spouses, partners, kids and friends, joined the event with full enthusiasm, with several donning their traditional attire. The event facilitated a talk by Professor Girijesh Prasad followed by discussion among the participants about Diwali and its significance in the Hindu religion and traditions. This was followed by a Bharatnatyam dance performance by an Ulster University’s alumni Ashwini Rudraprasad and Henna tattoo work by local artist Sarika Shah.

Professor Jim Harkin, Head of School of Computing Engineering & Intelligent Systems, welcomed all the attendees, and said:
“We are delighted to celebrate Diwali. The collaboration between the School and the BAME+ Network provides a wonderful opportunity for staff, students and their families to come together, learn from one another, and share in the joy and meaning of this important festival of light. We are very proud to support initiatives that highlight the diversity and global connections that make Ulster such a vibrant place to study and work.”
Professor Mary Hannon-Fletcher, Dean of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, commented:
“We are becoming a much more diverse community and at Ulster University, we delight in celebrating all cultures. Ulster University welcomes everyone, we aim to support everyone to succeed in their chosen role no matter their background. Celebrating events such as Diwali shines a light on all of us. May the festival of lights bring you joy, prosperity and happiness!”
Dr Deepika Nikam, Lecturer at School of Computing Engineering & Intelligent Systems, said:
“It is a privilege to celebrate Diwali here at Ulster University’s Derry~Londonderry campus. This event reflects our commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all staff and students. With the establishment of the new campus building, we are creating more vibrant spaces that bring together our growing international community - encouraging collaboration, cultural exchange and a true sense of belonging. By sharing the traditions and cultural significance of Diwali, we celebrate not only the festival of light but also the unity and diversity that define our university.”
Dr Priyank Shukla, Chair of Ulster University’s BAME+ Membership & Community Working Group, added:
“The idea of such events, organised by BAME+ Network in collaboration with schools and services of our university, is to connect BAME+ international students and staff with local students and staff in the university and local community. Events such as this are very important as they not only facilitate in raising cultural awareness, as we learn about different cultures and traditions, but they also help in building new friendships and collaborations. This is especially important for our international community who are away from their home countries.”
