Device Core Applications Profile/Configuration: Windows Laptops

The Autopilot-based “build” process configures a laptop or a desktop PC with a Windows operating system, a desktop environment that is managed by Intune Configuration Profiles and carries a core application suite.

  • The Autopilot-based service has been implemented to suit the needs of academic, research and administrative staff as well as postgraduate and undergraduate community.
  • Corporate laptops can only be accessed /operated via registered user accounts that are established in the Microsoft Azure environment with an Ulster University identity

The build and delivery process includes the following key components:

  • Device registration on the University’s tenancy of the Microsoft Azure Directory service.
  • Configuration of a base Windows 10 Enterprise operating system.
  • Compliance Policies exist to ensure device integrity /security (including encryption).
  • Device management and environment configuration via Configuration Profiles and other Microsoft technologies
  • Layering of cyber security and software management products (Bitlocker security, 365 Endpoint Security and Malwarebyes Nebula, SNOW software inventory agent)
  • Layering and configuration of a core set of applications that includes:
    • Internet browsers Edge (default) and Chrome
    • Microsoft Office 365 suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote, Publisher)
    • Microsoft Teams
    • Utilities such as Adobe Acrobat DC (PDF) reader, VLC Media Player,
  • Staff laptops have “My Documents” re-directed to the user’s OneDrive directory on the Microsoft Cloud with all business-critical files being required to be held on networked storage.
  • Capability to deploy /access to additional applications via the Company Portal Application which is tailored to suit particular user groups. Examples include:
    • Learning support applications (Panopto, Vevox PowerPoint plug-in, Solstice Active Learning, Mersive Solstice).
    • Support tools (Quick Assist).
    • Communications tools (Liberty Converse, Polycom Client)
    • Konica managed service campus printers.
    • Chrome browser, R-Studio, SPSS, 7-Zip, Putty and Java 8 (Banner support).
