As Northern Ireland’s civic university, Ulster University is committed to fostering healthy communities through the widening of access to higher education, creativity and culture. The important role creativity, social interaction and learning new skills plays in wellbeing is increasingly recognised. This is shown by the Government’s Culture White Paper (2016) and the NHS’s ‘Five steps to mental wellbeing’, as well as an emerging interest in the possible efficacy of social prescribing. Art making can express embodied and marginalised experiences in a way that may not be possible verbally.
This doctoral project will explore how working with clay and ceramics might promote the wellbeing of a range of community partners in Northern Ireland and beyond. Working closely with the Ceramics and Art Therapy teams at Belfast School of Art, in conjunction with relevant external organisations, the successful candidate(s) will develop, trial and evaluate models of practice for clay-based wellbeing resources. These models might be deployed by art therapists in therapeutic settings or adapted by museum professionals to engage particular communities. We welcome applications from artists, ceramicists and other creative practitioners with a socially-engaged practice, as well as from art therapists and museum professionals who have an interest in working with clay and ceramics. In addition to the development of a ceramics resource, the project may result in a range of practice-led outputs, including the creation of artefacts, exhibitions, and multi-media works.
