On Wednesday 1 October 2025, International Day of Older Persons, Ulster University celebrated its membership to the Age Friendly University Global Network in Coleraine. By gaining membership of the Age-Friendly University Global Network (AFUGN) we have taken another step in our commitment to taking proactive stances on equality, diversity and inclusion.
The AFUGN is an association of higher education institutions committed to promoting positive and healthy ageing and enhancing the lives of older members of the global community through innovative educational programmes, research agendas, curriculum development, online education, health and wellness activities, arts and culture programmes and civic engagement opportunities. It is committed to creating an age-friendly and age-inclusive world and advancing the unique contribution institutions of higher education can make in a globally ageing world.
The celebration event was attended by university staff, that included our academic, research and professional services staff, Age Friendly Coordinators from local councils, representatives from local branches of the University of the 3rd Age, and the Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland.
Siobhan Casey, Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland said:
“As a proud graduate of Ulster University, I’m delighted to be a part of marking the significant achievement of gaining membership in the Age-Friendly University Global Network. This membership represents a commitment to valuing people of all ages, to removing barriers to education and participation and to recognising learning, growth and contribution. By joining this network, Ulster University is saying very clearly that older people belong here.”
Professor Mary Hannon–Fletcher, Dean of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion highlighted:
“At Ulster University, we are committed to age inclusion. We’ve embedded older adults in our research and education through projects like the My Home Life programme, which enhances quality of life in care homes, and the Walk With Me study, promoting physical activity through peer-led walking groups. We recognise the value of experience and supporting people in the second half of life by providing mid-career reviews to our staff.
"We’re proud of our partnerships with local councils, U3A groups, and national organisations like Age NI and Alzheimer’s UK, ensuring our work is informed by and responsive to the needs of older adults. Together, these initiatives reflect our deep commitment to being an Age-Friendly University, where older people are not just included, but actively shaping our future."
Over the month of October, Positive Ageing Month, Ulster University will be working in collaboration with university departments, faculties and charity organisations to offer a range of events that celebrate the contributions of older people and enhance their connection to our campuses.
