The event was organised by Ulster University’s Dr Éamonn Ó Ciardha, Reader in Irish/English Literary & Historical Studies and Victoria Anne Pearson, PhD Researcher (History), with their colleagues, Professor Joachim Frenk, Chair of British Literary and Cultural Studies, and Ms. Nadja Freier, MA candidate (Irish Contemporary Literature), from Universität des Saarlandes.

This forum provided an opportunity for academics working in linguistics, the digital humanities, archival restoration and social and cultural pedagogies, to discuss and formulate innovative interdisciplinary initiatives and research networks that, it is hoped, will shape and reinvigorate the future of Irish Studies across Europe.

Colleagues from the Dictionary of Irish Biography (project of the Royal Irish Academy), VOICES Project and The Virtual Treasury of Ireland led by Trinity College Dublin, Canúint.ie (A digital Atlas of Irish Dialects developed by Dublin City University) and Ultonia: Cultural Dynamics of medieval and pre-modern Ulster in University College Cork, were joined by fellow collaborators from the European Federation of Associations and Centres of Irish Studies (EFACIS) from Leipzig, Tubingen, Wuppertal, Stuttgart, Flensburgs among others.

Dr Nioclás Mac Cathmhaoil, Ultonia project lead and Course Director for undergraduate Irish programmes, and Professor Philip McDermott, Senior Lecturer, who, has recently been appointed as Course Director for Sociology, both represented Ulster University’s vibrant and flourishing Irish Studies academic community.

To celebrate a tradition of cooperation, an exhibition ‘Operation Shamrock’, curated by Monica Brandes, was launched. It showcased the 1946 Dankebuch recently returned to the city of Saarbrücken by the O’Herlihy family. The event was organised with the generous support of the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and was opened by her excellency, H. E. Maeve Collins (Ambassador of Ireland to Germany), Anne-Marie Flynn (Consul General of Ireland in Frankfurt), Dominik Brodowski (Vice-President for Internationalisation and Europe, Saarland University) and Nine Miedema (Dean of the Philosophical Faculty of Saarland University.
