Device Core Applications Profile/Configuration: macOS – Apple Devices

The Jamf Cloud based Automated Device Enrolment (ADE) service is used to configure both staff and student Apple devices on the Ulster University Apple MDM service.

  • ADE is a process that is used to configure, secure and manage the corporate device and deliver a core suite of macOS software.
  • The ADE /Jamf Cloud service has been developed to meet corporate need and support academic, research and administrative staff as well as postgraduate and undergraduate community.
  • Corporate macOS devices can only be accessed /operated via registered user accounts that are established in the Microsoft Azure environment with an Ulster University identity

The build and delivery process includes the following key components:

  • Device registration on Apple Schools Manager
  • Enrolment in the University’s Jamf Cloud service
  • Configuration of the base macOS operating system.
  • Implementation of Jamf Cloud policies to ensure device and operating environment integrity /security /currency (XProtect, Malware Removal Tool (MRT), Gatekeeper, System Integrity Protection (SIP), Sealed System Volume (SSV), Firewall, Activation Lock)
  • Layering of cyber security and software management products (FileVault security, JamfProtect, 365 Endpoint Security and SNOW software inventory agent)
  • User notification of macOS operating system and other scheduled updates.
  • Layering and configuration of a core set of applications that includes:
    • Internet browsers Safari (default) and Chrome
    • Microsoft Office 365 suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote, Publisher)
    • Microsoft Teams
    • Utilities such as Adobe Acrobat DC (PDF) reader, VLC Media Player.
    • Access to centrally managed print services.
  • All business-critical files are required to be held on corporate networked storage (Onedrive Area).
  • Capability to deploy /access to additional applications via the Ulster Jamf Self Service Portal Application that exists on the Launchpad. Examples include:
    • Adobe Creative Cloud
    • Design Applications (eg: Autodesk, Blender, Davinci Resolve)
    • Bookmarks to common University web page services.
