Overview

Dr Shaun McFadden is a lecturer in the Centre for Engineering and Renewable Energy at the Magee Campus of Ulster University and is an adjunct assistant professor at Trinity College Dublin. Shaun’s major research interest relates to the understanding and application of material science that underpins manufacturing processes. For example, he has a significant track record in modelling solidification and phase change in metallic alloy systems (including casting technology, welding, etc.). Shaun has also published on the solid-state process known as Friction Stir Welding and teaches a broad curriculum of manufacturing, materials science, mechanics, and heat transfer. In addition, he has significant industry experience in automotive engineering and a research interest in off-road vehicle driveline and suspension system design.

Shaun was educated at University College Dublin: BE (1997), MEngSc (1999), PhD (2007). He has held previous academic positions at the Dublin Institute of Technology (2009-2012) and Trinity College Dublin (2012-2015). He is a chartered engineer and member of Engineers Ireland.
