Ulster University has awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) to Neil Guckian OBE at its Derry~Londonderry campus, recognising his commitment to leadership in health and social care.
As Chief Executive of the Western Health and Social Care Trust, Neil led a period of significant transformation across services in the North‑West, transforming pathways for patients, overseeing the transition of GP practices into Trust management, and critical work to stabilise and strengthen the workforce.
With more than 35 years’ experience in Health and Social Care, including 28 years at director level, Neil has held senior leadership roles across several Trusts, including the Northern and South Eastern Trusts, before being appointed Chief Executive of the Western Trust in 2021. His career has been defined by a focus on improving service delivery, strengthening system performance and enhancing patient outcomes.
He has also played a central role in regional collaboration and innovation. As former Chair of C‑TRIC, a strategic partnership between the Western Trust, Ulster University and Derry City & Strabane District Council, he supported the development of research and innovation capacity in the North‑West.
Neil's leadership as Director General of CAWT further strengthened cross‑border co‑operation in health provision, while his contribution to the Derry City and Strabane City Deal Board helped advance the establishment of the Graduate Entry Medical School at Ulster University’s Magee campus.

A Chartered Accountant with an MBA from Ulster University Business School, Neil was awarded an OBE in 2024 for services to health and the community.
This honour recognises his sustained leadership, his commitment to partnership and innovation, and his lasting contribution to improving health and social care for communities across Northern Ireland.
More than 5,000 students will graduate from Ulster University this summer, with ten days of celebrations taking place at ceremonies in Belfast, Coleraine & Derry~Londonderry.
