Ulster University Communication and Public Relations Masters student Kate O’Connor has made history after winning silver in the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

The 24-year-old Ulster University student delivered a sensational performance across the two-day event, setting five personal bests and securing Ireland’s first world track and field medal since Sonia O’Sullivan’s 1995 5,000m gold. Her 6,714 points placed her second behind American Anna Hall, with Great Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson and USA’s Taliyah Brooks sharing bronze.

O’Connor’s medal caps a remarkable year in which she also claimed pentathlon bronze at the European Championships, silver at the World Indoors, and heptathlon gold at the World University Games.

Kate is a true inspiration and role model for student athletes everywhere.
