Organised in partnership with the Belfast International Arts Festival, the evening brought renowned artist Colin Davidson and acclaimed broadcaster Mark Carruthers together, in conversation with Marie-Louise Kerr, who facilitated the event.
Together, they explored 'Colin Davidson: Twelve Paintings – conversations with Mark Carruthers' – a series of conversations between the two, structured around twelve of Colin's key works, from early Belfast street scenes to portraits of Queen Elizabeth II and John Hume.
Blending memoir and artistic reflection, Twelve Paintings offers readers a rare insight into the creative process and the ideas that shape Colin's art. Through candid conversations rooted in friendship, the book delves into themes of memory, place and the human stories behind his most recognisable works.
Guests were treated to a warm and insightful discussion on art, memory, and place, with selected works displayed in the auditorium to accompany the conversation.
Professor Paul Bartholomew, Vice-Chancellor of Ulster University, added:
“It was a privilege to host this very special evening with our Chancellor, Dr Colin Davidson, and Mark Carruthers and to hear such a thoughtful exploration of the development of this book. Colin’s work continues to inspire and connect people – in Northern Ireland and beyond – and we are honoured to celebrate this milestone with him and Mark.”
Speaking at the event, Dr Colin Davidson said:
“It was a joy to share the stories and reflections behind these works with friends and colleagues at Ulster University. Twelve Paintings has given me the opportunity to look back and connect the threads that have run through my life and art, and I’m delighted to mark this moment here at the University.”
Broadcaster, author and Visiting Professor, Mark Carruthers said:
“The conversations that became Twelve Paintings offered the chance to pause and look deeply at the threads that run through Colin's art – the people, places and moments that have shaped both his life and his work. Sharing those reflections with an audience at Ulster University, where Colin studied and now serves as Chancellor, made the evening especially meaningful.”
The University was delighted to welcome so many guests to celebrate this milestone with Colin and Mark, and to reflect on the enduring connection between art and storytelling in Northern Ireland.
