An internationally celebrated photographer and influential educator, Professor Parr leaves a profound legacy across the global photographic community and within Ulster University.

He is fondly remembered by our Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Seawright, who shared the following tribute:

A Tribute from Professor Paul Seawright, Deputy Vice-Chancellor

“Martin Parr is known internationally for his incisive photography and as a pioneer of critical, realist colour documentary work. While widely recognised for his artistic vision, he was also a committed educator, leading workshops and residencies across the world.

“I first appointed Martin to a Professorial role while working at the University of Wales, Newport, where he had great respect for the long tradition of documentary photography. I had known him since 1985, when he taught me during my first year at Art College, and he remained a generous supporter of my work for many years.

“When I joined Ulster University in 2007, I encouraged Martin to bring his expertise to Belfast. He worked enthusiastically with colleagues including Ken Grant and Donovan Wylie, forming a formidable team within the Photography Department. Martin’s knowledge of documentary photography and photobook publishing was unparalleled. His three-volume Photobook: A History remains a definitive text in the field.

“Deeply networked, widely travelled and endlessly curious, Martin was always the person to ask about new work or emerging practitioners. His generosity as a mentor and educator made a lasting impact on our students and staff.

“We will deeply miss his contribution at Ulster, and his passing will be felt across the international photographic community.”

Professor Parr’s remarkable career, commitment to contemporary photography, and influence as an educator will continue to resonate with students, colleagues and practitioners across the world.

Ulster University extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and the global photographic community.
