Ulster University’s Professor Frank Casey, OBE MD FRCP MRCPCH FRICS BSc, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Newburger-Bellinger Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Award, one of the most prestigious honours in the field of paediatric cardiology and neurodevelopment.

The award, established in 2013 by the Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Outcome Collaborative (CNOC), recognises outstanding contributions to understanding and improving neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with congenital heart disease. Professor Casey will deliver the keynote address at CNOC’s 13th Annual Scientific Sessions, which will take place in Denver, Colorado from 17–19 September 2025.

A Clinical Professor of Paediatric Cardiology at both Ulster University and Queen’s University Belfast, Professor Casey has been internationally recognised for his work on the long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes, exercise participation, and quality of life of children treated for congenital heart disease.

Speaking on the announcement, Professor Casey said:

“I am honoured to receive the Newburger-Bellinger Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Award. This recognition is especially meaningful given the legacy of Drs. Newburger and Bellinger, whose work has transformed our understanding of neurodevelopment in children with heart disease. Improving long-term outcomes and quality of life for children with congenital heart disease has been a key goal for me throughout my career, and I see this award as recognition for the outstanding work and commitment of my team here in Northern Ireland.”

Professor Casey previously served as Clinical Lead for the All-Island Congenital Heart Disease Network from 2016 to 2022, where he played a central role in shaping this innovative cross-border healthcare initiative. In addition to his leadership roles, he directs the congenital heart disease research programme across both Ulster University and Queen’s University Belfast.

His distinguished career has earned him numerous accolades, including an OBE in 2023 for services to healthcare in Northern Ireland, Honorary Fellowship of the Irish Cardiac Society, and Honorary Lifetime Membership of the Association for European Paediatric Cardiology.

Ulster University extends its warmest congratulations to Professor Casey on this well-deserved recognition.
