Passport, visa and BRP problems

What to do if your BRP or passport becomes lost or stolen.

  • If your visa vignette is lost, stolen or damaged in the UK

If your visa vignette is lost, stolen or damaged within the UK, you must:

    1. Notify UKVI of the loss or theft
    2. Apply for a new passport

UKVI will email or send you details of what you must do in order to collect your BRP.

Please contact compliance@ulster.ac.uk for advice if your visa vignette is lost, stolen or damaged in the UK.

  • If your BRP is lost, stolen or damaged inside or outside the UK

If you have lost your BRP card or it was stolen, you must report this to UKVI as soon as possible at the link below so they can cancel it.

You will not be able to use your BRP if you find it after you report it lost or stolen.

UKVI will contact you within 1 working day of reporting your BRP as lost or stolen.  You will be told if you need to replace your BRP.

  • Replacing a BRP inside the UK

If your BRP was lost, stolen or damaged in the UK and UKVI tells you that you must replace your BRP, you must apply for a replacement within 3 months.

  • Replacing a BRP outside the UK

If your BRP was lost, stolen or damaged outside the UK, you will need a ‘replacement BRP visa’.

This will let you re-enter the UK once only.

You must apply online in most countries.

The ‘replacement BRP visa’ costs £154.

You must then apply for a replacement BRP within 1 month of your return to the UK:

Warning: You can be fined up to £1000.00 and made to leave the UK if you do not apply for a replacement BRP in time.

  • If your passport is lost or stolen in the UK

You will need to apply for a replacement passport.  Contact the Embassy of your home country to find out how you can apply for a new passport.

  • If your passport is lost or stolen outside the UK

If you have lost your passport outside the UK you must report this to the police as soon as possible.  Make sure that you are given proof that you have reported the loss/theft and try to get a crime reference number.
