About the programme

This programme responds to the ever changing healthcare requirements of the twenty-first century by further developing highly knowledgeable and skilled graduates from the health and social care professions. The programme particularly extends the knowledge base necessary for practitioners to function at an advanced level and to develop into expert or advanced practitioners, advisers, managers or educators within their particular area of expertise. There is emphasis upon the application of knowledge to practice, thus enhancing leadership capacity.

Under the University's 'Qualifications and Credit Framework', the achievement of an Honours degree requires the successful completion of 360 credits of study at levels 4, 5 and 6. In regard to this programme, students enter the programme at level 6 having gained exemption for level 4 and 5 modules through the University's 'Accreditation of Prior Learning' policy when both prior certificated and experiential learning will be accepted in consideration of exemption. Where exemption is obtained for levels 4 and 5 modules, the programme is normally completed over one academic year in full-time mode and two academic years (up to a maximum of five years) in part-time mode.

There are two compulsory 30 credit point modules, Health and Wellbeing and an Undergraduate Research Project  On the non-clinical pathway students may choose to study two out of three optional modules in Leadership, Communication or Ethics to the total value of 60 credit points, or alternatively opt to study modules within one of the following subject specific 60 credit pathways: diabetes care, forensic mental healthcare or stroke care. Full-time undertake two modules each semester in an academic year, while part-time students undertake one module per semester over two academic years.

The non-clinical pathway is offered in full-time and part-time modes at both the Belfast and Magee campuses, whereas the clinical named pathways are only offered on part-time mode at the Belfast campus.
