Purpose

Ulster University School of Medicine is keen to recognise the considerable contribution of clinicians and other individuals from outside the University to the Education and Research activities of the School. Individuals who have made a significant and sustained contribution to the School can be awarded an Honorary or Visiting title as detailed in this document.

The University can remunerate clinical contributors to lecture-based teaching on campus under the contract of Visiting Lecturer. The University does not count remunerated Visiting Lecturer activity towards the award of an Honorary title unless in exceptional circumstances where the individual makes a significant other contribution. Individuals may choose to undertake lecture teaching in-kind as part of their SPA time or in their own time, and this would be considered as eligible activity towards award of an Honorary title.

The expectation is that these titles are awarded for a period of three years in the first instance. Renewal is contingent upon continued, satisfactory contribution to the School as confirmed by the School and determined at annual consultant or GP appraisal.

Levels of title that can be awarded

Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer

Applications are made to the School, via the Subdean of the Trust in which the doctor works, or the School’s Lead for GP Education.

Honorary Clinical Senior Lectureships are normally awarded to established GPs, or consultants or SAS doctors who are playing a major role in the work of the University, usually through active and frequent participation in undergraduate or postgraduate teaching, or supervision for higher degrees.

Examples of activity also include regular participation in and contribution to MMI assessment of applicants, student mentoring, development of assessments as examples. Participation in OSCE examining which is SUMDE funded will not in itself render an individual eligible for Hon SL title nomination. Further information is provided on the nomination form.

It is expected that an Honorary title will require commitment of approximately 40 hours a year to the School.

For Information: re Visiting Professor

This is a title awarded by the University and is through University nomination of a senior individual who is delivering activity which, were that person an employee of the University, would be at a level to warrant professorial status.

They may hold Directorships of, or lead major research teams in, organisations with which the University has a close working relationship in research (such as Associated Institutions) or hold similar positions in local organisations with which the University has close working relationships in the areas of teaching or research infrastructure.

A Visiting Professorial title is generally conferred for three years, and as part of the annual academic promotions round, existing Honorary Professorships are reviewed and proposals are made for their renewal where appropriate.

A Visiting Professor is generally expected to contribute up to 14 days per year to the University.
