Overview

With particular focus on student mental health across the higher education sector, Supervisors play a critical role in mentoring and supporting PhD researchers on their complex and often individual journey. Undertaking a PhD is naturally a stressful experience, however by understanding and planning for the pressure points, Supervisors can play a key role in managing PhD researcher stress and anxiety.

This presentation will describe PhD researcher experiences with a view to empowering Supervisors to provide targeted support, balancing the rigour of the academic learning with PhD researcher wellbeing.  Evidence relating to PhD researcher mental health will be reviewed and clear, practical example of how Supervisors can help to identify warning signs of toxic stress and burnout.  The presentation will conclude with a view to the future and opportunity to explore trauma informed University models of practice.
