Dr Stein Menting

Overview

Following a BSc in Biomedical Science (Maastricht University) and a MSc in Sport Science (University of Groningen), Stein completed his PhD research, awarded cum laude, at the University of Groningen in 2023. He conducted postdoctoral research at the Administrative Data Research Centre Northern Ireland, and the Dutch Royal Speed Skating Association. In 2025, he joined Ulster University as a Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Science.

Research focus

Although he has broad interests across sport and exercise science, Stein’s primary research focus is on understanding how individuals learn to regulate their effort (pacing) to optimise sport performance and enhance enjoyment in everyday life.

His research draws on perspectives from sport and exercise psychology, talent identification, athlete development, and skill acquisition. Rather than focusing on a single sport, he works across a range of disciplines, including speed skating, swimming, athletics, cycling, and football. Methodologically, he combines laboratory- and field-based research with secondary analyses of competition results and administrative data, with a particular interest in longitudinal methods.

Teaching & supervision

Stein coordinates the Sport & Exercise Psychology and Research Methods modules within the Sport & Exercise Science and Sport & Exercise Nutrition undergraduate programmes. He also supervises undergraduate research projects in the BSc Sport & Exercise Science and dissertation projects in the MSc Sport & Exercise Psychology.
