Dr Ruoyin Luo
Overview
Dr Ruoyin Luo is Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice at Ulster University. She holds medical qualifications and a PhD in Clinical Pharmacy. Before moving into academia, she worked in tertiary hospital settings. Her background spans medicine and clinical pharmacy, informing her research on data-driven approaches to medicines optimisation and chronic disease management.
Her work focuses on the development and evaluation of computational and AI-enabled methods to support early risk identification, personalised prescribing, and the discovery of digital biomarkers. She collaborates across clinical and analytical teams to improve the safety, efficiency, and individualisation of therapeutic decision-making.
Current research includes:
- Predicting medicine adherence in diabetes: Developing machine-learning models to identify people with type 2 diabetes at high risk of non-adherence, enabling proactive clinical support.
- Advanced machine learning for healthcare data: Designing robust methods to address the imbalanced and heterogeneous datasets typical of electronic health records, improving the reliability of biomedical predictions.
- Quantitative modelling of infectious diseases: Investigating drivers of susceptibility and prognosis in malaria to inform public-health strategies and clinical management.
- Supporting neurodiverse healthcare professionals: Examining the experiences of GP trainees with dyslexia and developing evidence-based tools to promote inclusive educational and training outcomes.
As a mentor, Dr Luo is committed to building a supportive, inclusive, and collaborative environment that enables trainees to develop strong analytical, clinical, and research skills. She is always interested in hearing from motivated prospective PhD students in the areas of AI in healthcare, predictive modelling, and medicines optimisation
