Overview

Mrs Frances Devine is Course Director for the MSc International Event Management, in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

Following her BA (Hons) degree in Hotel and Tourism Management (Magee, 1992), Frances worked in the contract catering services sector with Compass Group/Catering as a catering manager throughout the province of Northern Ireland between 1993 and 1997.

Continuing her education at Ulster University, she completed an MA in International Tourism Management in 2000, and in 2009 gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Further and Higher Education. In addition, she is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is a Fellow of the University’s Centre for Higher Education and Research Practice.

Frances joined the University in 2001 from the former Northern Ireland Hotel and Catering College, Portrush.

She has been in academia for 19 years and her key areas of teaching are managerial studies, leadership and business performance and human resource management.

She is actively involved in researching new trends in human resource management in the hospitality and tourism sector, presently focusing on cultural diversity training.

Frances has won two Highly Commended Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence in writing and has published over 20 articles in both professional and academic journals. She is also an academic reviewer for International Journals including, the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management.

Frances has held the role as external examiner at institutions both nationally and internationally including the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, and the International University College (IUC), Dobrich, Bulgaria. In relation to engagement with industry, she works with the Hastings Hotel Group, Northern Ireland in delivering a Management Ambassador Programme as part of the Certificate of Personal & Professional Development (CPPD) framework.

In November 2016, Frances achieved the Institute of Leadership and Management qualification (ILM).
